Word XP slow on server

Server running 03 with Exchange 03, six comps in the
office two with word 2000 and four with xp. I have a
laptop. Every comp hooked up the network access files
quickly. When I access a doc on the server it pulls up
slow then freezes and the word icon in the upper left
corner goes blank, then 5-10 minutes later the doc pulls
up but I still can't work in it. 5 minutes later it is
fully functional. Saving and closing same response. The
only difference with the xp machines and my laptop is
that I have front page 03 installed. However, when I
access a doc on my hard drive it works fine. Updates are
identical. And help? Thanks.

OK. There may be many possibilities here but the most common problem
associated with laptops is the printer driver. You need to install your
network printer driver locally as though it is connected directly to your
laptop. Although it doesn't exist locally Word only needs to interrogate the
driver, not the printer.

The other possibility is that you are using mapped drives instead of UNC
paths under Tools, Options, File Locations tab for the network connections.
Maybe you have old invalid mapped drives set up or maybe Word doesn't have
access to the templates on the server that the documents were created from?

Finally, you don't have Norton Anti Virus installed on your notebook?

No Norton, learned my lesson on that along time ago...i
use trend micro. i don't use the server printer, i have
a stand alone i plug in directly to the laptop. BUT,
the mapped network drives! sounds like that may be the
problem. thank u so much. i'll follow up to the group as
to status.
