Word XP stops responding when opening complex Word 2000 documents

When I attempt to open a relatively complex Word 2000
document (tables, footers), Word 2002 immediately hangs
up. Eventually it will tell me that Word has stopped
responding. What can I do to work with my Word 2000 and
Word 97 documents?

If you are running Norton Antivirus, try disabling the Office Plugin that comes with it.
