When opening word by double clicking on the file, it opens
the document but changes the name automatically to
document 1. How do you correct this.

Either the "document" is actually a template (.dot), or the default action
for documents has become changed from Open to New. You can change this by
reregistering Word (Start | Run: type winword /r and press Enter) or by
changing the action through Tools | Folder Options | File Types: DOC |
Advanced: Select Open and click Set Default.
