Word2002 crashes when trying to insert symbols

I am trying to insert a symbol in a word document using the drop dow
insert menu. The program crashes. No problem with Excel or any othe
Office product. I have the exact same programs on my laptop and i
works just fine however on my desktop it does not work. The messag
appears as

An exception 'unhandled win32 exception' has occurred in winword.exe

and debugging shows

Unhandled exception at 0x3004eef3 in winword.exe:0xC0000005:Acces
violation writing location 0x00000000

If anyone knows the "fix" please share. I have exhausted all my limite
resources.

This could be the result of a damaged printer driver. Try deleting and
reinstalling the printer, preferably with an updated driver.
