Word6 Installation Problem

A

Alan

I'm attempting to load Word 6 into my G-3/OS 9.1. I get a message saying;
"Setup was unable to locate a valid Setup Table File (STF) and cannot
proceed without one."
The program is on floppies, but I also tried a friend's CD version with the
same results. Also tried with the old Word (which quit working) both still
installed and uninstalled--still no luck.
Would appreciate any help or suggestions.
Thanks.

Alan,

It's generally accepted that Word 6 and before will not work on an OS after
OS 8.6, although one participant in the newsgroup has done it by
transferring an installed version of Word 6 holus-bolus across from one hard
disc to another.

A Microsoft Knowledge Base article deals with this problem: see
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q288/7/69.asp

If you do a Google search on this newsgroup
(http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search?q=group:*mac.office.word)
for [exact phrase] "Word 6" you'll find the previous discussions of this
issue. They'll give you more info.

A conclusion of many of us is that Word 6 was not a good rendition of Word
-- it was a port of the Windows version on to the Mac that resulted in
widespread adverse reaction, and was subsequently fairly spectacularly fixed
up with Word 98.

Since the distant days of Word 6, operating systems have come a *long* way,
including OS 9. Word 6 does not react well to their operation, and vice
versa. Your best option would be to buy a second-hand licensed version of
Word 98 via e-Bay and install it instead.

Let me correct some of my Southen English:

Apple at some point in the OS9 chain changed the way the installer
program worked because there were other programs I could not get
to work as well by reinstalling.

If its "already and installed and functioning correctly it will work on
OS 9.1.

Once you go to OS9.2 though it will not work.

When I prurchased my g4-500 new I copied my entire hard drive contents
from my 7100/66.
Word 6.0.1.a and Excel 5.0.1a worked as they should (I was using OS9.1
on the the 7100/66).

Then when I went to 9.2.1 then a lot of the functions quit working.

Apple at some point in the OS9 chain changed the way the installer
program worked because the re were other program I could get to work as
well be installing.
