Word97 can't open excel spreadsheet when attached in document on X

Within our company we are currently running XP machines with office 97 on.
When a Word 97 document has an excel spreadsheet attached within it, the
spreadsheet will not open. Instead the following error message appears "Word
cannot edit the Microsoft Excel Worksheet".

I've looked all through Microsoft and all I can find is article 185017
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/185017/EN-US which describes the problem, but
the resolution to run Office SR2, which I've done, doesn't solve the problem
on XP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you're using Norton AntiVirus (or any similar Symantec product), make
sure the Office Plug-in is disabled.

We're not using Norton AntiVirus or symantec products. We use McAfee AntiVirus.
