Would anyone know of a way to copy Wordart text in a drawing and then edit
the copied text to add a word or two and still
have the letters look the same (width and height) as the text you copied it
from?

If you mean that you have a bitmap image that contains text, then the answer is
no. The text in that case is part of the image and is not a Word Art object.
If that's not the case and the "drawing" is a group of objects created in
PowerPoint, you might be able to ungroup it and just select the WordArt object
and click on it to edit it.

I'm sorry, maybe my description wasn't worded right.
If you have the word "Powerpoint" in Wordart and you made a copy of it and
then added the word "Newsgroup" so that it
now said "Powerpoint Newsgroup" the horizontal dimension of the edited words
would still equal the dimension of the original
single word. If there is any way to change this would you let me know?

First, to retain a reasonable aspect ratio, you'll probably want to double click
on the object to edit it and reduce the font size by about .5 of what was
originally used. Then if you need to "tweak" it you can click on the object to
select it and drag one of the "handles" left , right or diagonally to adjust
the width, height or overall size.
