Words 2000 footers print preview

I have a 150 pg book that has facing pages. The footers (page #s only)
need to alternate so that they always appear on the outer page
margins. When I get the footers behaving and looking perfect in print
preview mode, they still print incorrectly (all left or right
margins). This happens using a variety of printers and even printing
to a PDF format. How can print preview be completely misleading like
this? Am I missing something obvious?

Are you using Insert | Page Numbers, or are you using the "Different odd and
even" setting on the Layout tab of Page Setup and then manually inserting
the page numbers in the Footer?
