Is it possible to turn off word wrap in Word?

No.

Tell us what you want to accomplish, and we may be able to suggest a better
tool -- such as Notepad.

I have a friend taking a Computer Basic Studies course at
the local college. The instructor is insisting that word
wrap can be turned off in Microsoft Word. However, will
not instruct the class how this is done. Instead the
instructor told the class that this will be on their next
test and the class had to tell her.

Not a very friendly instructor!

You can turn it off in the display (in Normal view only) by checking the box
for "Wrap to window" on the View tab of Tools | Options. This doesn't affect
the way the document prints or where the line breaks will be if it is saved
as a .txt file.
