Work 2000 hangs up when open doc

When opening a document within a folder that contains
large amounts of files using the open option within word
word stop responding. I uninstalled word 2000 and applied
service Pack with no sucsess. It seems that when I open
the same folder thru UNC it open with no problems. The
same problem is on multiple computers. Computers are Win
2000.
