% Work Complete field

Hi,

I'm using MSP 2003 Pro and I have encountered a problem
with the '% Work Complete' field. I want users to be able
to adjust this value without it affecting the 'Actual
Work' field. The Help doc says to "Clear the Updating
Task Status Updates Resource Status" in the Tools->Options-
Calculations menu. However, even after I uncheck the
box, the 'Actual Work' field is still adjusted when a '%
Work Complete' value is entered. I have cleared the box
in the local project file, on the server, and in the local
default projects settings.

FYI, I'm trying to do this because sometimes people take
less (or more!) time than was scheduled to get a task
done. So I don't want the 'Actual Work' & '% Work' fields
linked together.

Thanks,
Jason

Hello Jason,

That's the normal way for Project to evaluate progress at the work level.

NB : The Updating Task Status Updates Resource Status option has nothing to
do with that. This option says that the progress on the task level will
generate, or not, progress at the resource level.

The best thing you have to do is to track your progress at work level in 2
fields :

- Actual Work

- Remaining Work

Never play with the % Work Complete. Nor with any other % !

Hope this helps,

Jason,

You can't disconnect the % Work Complete and Actual Work fields.
Instead, you should have your resources update the Remaining Work
field to accurately reflect the amount of work they have yet to do on
each task. I have never yet encountered a situation in my plans where
it would be beneficial to adjust either of the % complete fields. I
prefer to work with the effort fields instead (Actual Work and
Remaining Work). They are much more accurate than a percentage.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I'm still confused why the help
file says it is possible to have the % Work Complete and
Actual work fields independent of one another when it
isn't the case.

Anyway, I'll just work around the problem and use a
customized text field for a user entered % complete, and
allow everyone to update it on the Server.

Thanks,
Jason
