Work is changed when Importing

I recently upgraded to MS Project 2002.

Previously, I was importing task information from Access
to Project via ODBC links. I create tasks as Fixed Work
and then import assignments with each resource's work
defined as hours. The hours were being imported properly
before.

Now, however, Work is being changed when I import the task
assignments, no matter what I do. I even tried creating a
spreadsheet and importing from the spreadsheet. Does
anybody have any idea what is happening?

After working with this some more, here is what is
happening:

When I import data into a new project, the Work values are
being imported properly. When I open a new project and
Append the imported data to that project, WORK gets
changed. I know what I need to do now, but I don't
understand why Project is behaving this way.
