Workbook size gone wild

Hi there:
I posted a problem about only being able to open 1
workbook at a time, or else the 2nd one loses it's
formatting.
I am not sure that it has to do with workbook size. I have
created 4 workbooks: all are 13 sheets long, 24 columns by
55 rows, and simple time-format formulas in 5 columns. 1
row is in bold. There are a few simple comments.
the problem is that these are 27mb files! Opening and
saving takes 5 seconds.
I have turned off tracking changes, and the size is the
same with or without that.
Any suggestions what is going on??? I need to get these to
a reasonable size.

Your file is likely corrupt.

You might wish to recreate your workbook now while you still can. Do not
copy and paste formats.

Can it be corrupt and still work?
for interest sake, I opened the file with Quattro Pro 10,
and the file size is less than 1 mb.

Yes, it could be corrupt and still work, for now.

Think of it as a poorly running car. It's slow and sluggish, but it still
gets you to work. And then one cold winter day when you need it most, the
car doesn't start at all.

You file could still be corrupted and still allow you to function. One
telltale sign is a bloated file size. That's a dead give-away.

If you have any VBA modules attached, you should use Bovey's code cleaner.
Otherwise, use the steps outlined by Jan Karel to begin to attempt to
"clean" your workbook. If you file size doesn't shrink considerably, then
start redoing your file while you are able.

Thanks for the reply. I have completely redone the books,
and they are 90% smaller now, as well as incorporating
features that I thought of after I finished the last ones.
