I use to be able to keep more than one workbook open at a time. Now if I
close one they all close. How do I fix this.

My bet is you're clicking on that giant X in the top right corner. This closes
the application.

You want to use the X on the top right corner of the worksheet window--or use
File|Close.

You need to open the excel files from differentt windows. the way to do this
is to open a new excel window from the Start - Program Menu. Then using the
Open Menu Open you excel file. Repeat this for each excel file. If you open
the Excel file from your desk top all the files end up in the same excel
window. You can see if the files are in the same window by minimizing the
worksheets. All the books are in the same window.

I find that opening separate instances of excel causes me trouble when I want to
exchange data/formulas between different instances.

And I would think that it could have a significant impact on performance with
lots of instances of excel running.
