Workgroup not switching

Just when I thought everything was all good! =)
Could be simple. I have a secured database under workgroup Secured.mdw and
then my default which is the System.mdw. Here's what I did. I thought I
better make a copy of my secured database... but unsecured, in the default
workgroup. In case I wanted to use parts of it for other databases. In
order to do that, I made a copy of my back up and then went from there.
Opened the copy and undid the security to it, but I had to go under the
Tools, Security, Workgroup Administrator and manually change over to my
Secured.mdw workgroup. Once I was done, I went back through and manually
switched back to my System.mdw. I now have an unsecured copy of my database
which is good but then I went to go use my secured database and it wouldn't
open because Users (Admin) have no permissions. It didn't prompt for a user
name and password because it didn't even switch over to the secured
workgroup. All my shortcuts are fine. Everything is labeled correctly with
the /wkgroup switch in it. I didn't change anything anywhere. I even
restarted the computer thinking maybe Access was confused and it didn't help.
Is there a reason that manually changing the workgroup would cause the
/wkgroup not to work??? I would think that even if you had 10 workgroups,
whenever you used a shortcut with the switch, it would do just that...

What order did you actually take? I would have used a desktop shortcut to open your existing secure mdb. Then hit Ctrl-O and opened the copy you want to unsecure. Then give permissions to the Users Group. Exit Access, reopen Access (so you're using system.mdw), Create a new mdb and import all the objects from the copy. You wouldn't need to join any workgroup by default (i.e. leave it as system.mdw).

How do you know? Are you opening via your desktop shortcut?
It sounds as though you are opening via system.mdw (no login dialog, and no permissions)

All my shortcuts are fine. Everything is labeled correctly with
the /wkgroup switch in it.

Hopefully you mean /wrkgrp; if not that is your problem.

Yes it would, providing your shortcut target is right.

I followed the instructions per the Access help. I basically made a copy of
my copy. I don't have it as a shortcut anywhere because it's just a copy, so
there's no target to open it in the secured workgroup. For that reason I
manually changed workgroups, opened up the copy of the copy and gave the
permissions to the Users group, so on and so forth as the instructions
indicated. So I am joined to my default workgroup which is just the standard
System.mdw. Now when I try to open my secured mde per the desktop shortcut
which was never touched in the process of unsecuring, it opens under the
default workgroup and not the secured one like it's supposed to. All the
info is correct because it hasn't changed and it was working fine before I
manually changed workgroups and then manually changed back. The desktop
shortcut for my secured db is routed to the AutoFEUpdater, and again wasn't
bothered during any of the other things I was doing.

If you are not getting a login prompt while using your secure mdw, then the password for the 'Admin' user in that workgroup has been reset to null. If you use your shortcut (yes, you'll get no permissions, and won't be able to open the mdb - just dismiss those messages), then go to Tools, Security, User and Group Accounts and then the change password tab... set a password for the Admin user.

If you followed the steps in the Help, it's possible that you reset the Admin password to null at some point in the secure mdw.
