Works 2005 freeze

I have a relatively new Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop with Works 2005 installed. Just recently when attempting to access a Word file the file would not open and the computer froze with an approximate 3" x 3" square in the middle of the screen. I could not shut the computer down and the only way I finally could was to restore to the day before. Then it finally shut down. After rebooting I again tried to access some of my word files but with the same negative result. Can anyone out the tell me what happened and how to solve this problem?
