Worksheet Names and Formulas/Macros

Is it possible to create formulas or macros that include the worksheet's name?
I am creating a workbook to track performance information that happens 8 times a week. I have a master file with 8 sheets, one for each perfromance. I manually rename each sheet to reflect the date of the performance. Is there a way to use formulas to rename the worksheets after inputting the correct name of the first one? This would enable us to use formulas that carry from sheet to sheet as well.

I don't know if it is possible, but I haven't found anything to help me in the microsoft how to pages.
Thanks.

For one way, see

XL04 and previous only, since it uses VBA.

It would certainly be possible to applescript XL08 to manually update
sheet names.
