Would the Real Em Dash Please Stand Up

Michael,

I don't know. What happens when you use the normal
keyboard sequence CTRL+ALT+numeric keypad minus sign?

When I insert an em dash into a Word 2003 document using the menu sequence:

Insert > Symbol > Special Characters > Em Dash

the character inserted into the text is a hex 97 and the
result is exactly what I expect.
However, when I assign a keyboard shortcut key to this
action and use it to insert an em dash, the character
inserted is a hex 28 and the line spacing of the line
where the symbol is inserted increases so that it isn't
consistent with the line spacing of the paragraph.
