Wrong Text in Navigation Bar

Using Pub 2000, I get the wrong page title in the Navigation bar. I have
copied pages, renamed pages using the Web Page Properities; I have deleted
the nav bar and re-added it. I still get the wrong title displayed in the Nav
bar. The text is for pages that don't exist any more.

How can I edit the pages source code or properities to find why this "wrong"
information is displayed?

You will need to rebuild your navbar. First back up your file in case
something goes wrong. Then go to File > Web Properties > Page and untick
"Add hyperlink to Web navigation bar" for each page, so that each page is
disconnected from the navbar wizard. Then go through each page and delete
the navbar off the page. Go to the design gallery and pick a navbar and
insert it on page 1, which becomes your new navbar wizard control. Go
through each page and recheck the page's option to be in the navbar which
then populates the navbar wizard with the page. At that point the navbar on
page 1 should display a link for each page, and you then copy the navbar and
go through the remaining pages and paste it.

David, just curious after reading this post, why not just build the nav bar
on the index page then send it to the background so it appears on every page
in the exact same place.

Good question. The navbar wizard writes relative links which don't work in
the background or the master page in newer versions. (In fact you should not
use the master page with web documents in general.) Furthermore, if you are
using a background color, texture or image, the navbar is likely to be
hidden from view. And finally, if you place the navbar where you want it on
the 1st page, copy, and then just paste on each successive page, it will
appear at the exact same place if you pages are oriented the same as the
first page.

I normally build my navigation manually with text and assigning a hyperlick
and it just saves time sending it to the background.

Hey, does a hyperlick work like a hyperlink <grin>? Can I hyperlick an
ice-cream cone? I guess I am not the only one that is thinking one thing,
and type another...

Actually, I gave up on the navbar wizard a long time ago and like you, use
textual navbars and also build and insert navbars using Xara's MenuMaker.
With Pub 2000 menus limited to 10 pages, I outgrew that limitation almost
immediately.

Thanks for the help, but ... Even after rebuilding like you said the wrong
text still showed up. I did fix the problem after much more "playing". I had
to edit the title and let the wizard "sync" the data (even thought the text
on the page was good). The wizard chaged the text to the now valid although
"not wanted" new title. I then changed the title again to the desire
(orginal) title and the wizard sync the text again to finish the experience.

the next version for Office 2007 has a more robust nav bar system.

Thank You for your reply... This has happened to me in the past and I
couldn't "fix" it. I was surprised that there wasn't more "posts" on the
subject. Thank you once again for being there and help US less capable.

Exactly why should you not use the master page for web docs? I thought that
was the point?

Just curious because I am having all kinds of problems.

As per your other message, you are used to using FrontPage, and that is a
whole different animal.

Why not? Just cuz ;-)

I really can't explain it better than I did in the attached thread. It gives
unpredictable results in Publisher. In some cases it might work ok, but in
other cases it won't and especially with any hyperlink, as that link will
likely be killed by turning everything on the master page to an image.
Especially a problem when you try to put your navbar on a master page...
