X axis automatically defaults to zero

When using the automatic scale for graphs sometimes it defaults to zero even
when the data spread is fairly narrow - why ?

This is just how Excel calculates the minimum and maximum scale. They have
an article about this, which explains how it calculates the min and max, but
not the major unit.
