XLS File won't import

C

Chip Cooper

O.K. I have to revise this: it is only happening on this one particular
file, right now, and
that is an Excel spreadsheet, and not all the spreadsheet files, only this
one.
Originally I had thought that it would import none of my spreadsheet files;
but, it's only happening on one. I don't know what is making this file
special.
If I try to import this one particular file, I get the error message:

"An error occurred accessing your FrontPage web files. Authors - if
authoring against a web server (WHICH I AM NOT, the site is local) please
contact the webmaster for this server's site. Webmaster's please see the
server's system log for more details."

The event viewer says:
Received empty response from Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions
Which, to my knowledge, I am not running.

Again, I'm not aware of anything special about this file that would prevent
it. I *DO* know that if I log onto my external server running FPE, I do not
have this problem.

Any ideas would be helpful.. as you can imagine, not being able to import
files, especially this one, really cripples me. I'm a Rotarian, and this is
the club roster and I need to keep the latest modifications on the site.

I consider this problem, continuous, repeatable, and mission critical.
Thanks ahead of time for any help.

As a workaround since you can import it into the live site, why not do that,
then you should be able to publish it from the live site back to your local
machine.

Is this file 1 MB or more in size, as a number of users have report this as
a problem recently.

I've actually used that workaround; but, I have a habit, for speed, of
working locally. If it won't be fixed; then that's what I'll have to do.
But, it really wastes a lot of time.

And, surprising to me, the answer to your second question is ... Yes, it is
over 1 MB in size, and it meets the criteria of being the only file that
won't import (at this time). Let's move this thing into the known bug
status and apparently since it's only just started... (them darn updates,
sometimes I hate 'em and yet I can't seem to live without 'em)

So what next? <sigh> I'm afraid I know the answer...

I won't call it a bug, since I and many other have all of the various
updates, and do not have any problems importing any file size into a web.
However I do not work with disk-based webs, only server-based.

Do you suppose that installing PWS onto my Win2000 machine would help?
I'd be concerned about holes I might put in security; but, that could just
be my ignorance.

T

Thomas A. Rowe

Under Windows 2000 Pro, you would install IIS under Add/Remove Windows
Components, the PWS is only for Windows 98/SE machines.

That might be a solution, at least with my Windows 2000 server with FP2000
extensions, I have no problems import any file over 1 MB via FP.

You could also move the file into the web via Windows Explorer, then open
the web in FP and run Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks so that FP knows the
file exist and will then publish it to the remote server.

Ahhh! Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks how long I've been looking for ye!
Sorry, seems on topic; but, isn't. I've noticed that once in a while I'd
get files that won't publish, and, I wasn't sure how to get things "SYNC"'d
back up. Thanks for that one.
You'all are making a believer out of me. I've been programming and
developing for years and I've always avoided Newsgroups. <sigh> But, I'm
getting sold.
I'd pop into one and answer a few questions; but, usually never got, and
never really expected to find answers.
Tom (Thomas) Thanks a bunch.

I'll tell you what my real concern is *why* does a file larger than 1M need
to have server extensions. Maybe the file is larger than 1M because it has
a parasite of some kind (yes, I'm paranoid) What gets me is the total lack
of help from Microsoft Knowledge Base, and generally, I've always discovered
that I'm not alone in a problem. By the time I'm to this point; I've tried
all the usual stuff, repair, reinstall, event logs, KB searches, internet
searches and nothing. It's frustrating. I'm sure you'll agree.... I
shouldn't *have* to find a workaround! And why did it only start recently?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

I don't know why it start recently, and unless folks call MS Tech support,
it may never become a KB, unless the MVPs beginning to notice it on a
regular basis, then it might become a KB.

Close FP.
Open Windows Explorer.
Copy & paste the file into your web folder.
Run FP.

Hello Chip

Here is something to try. We have been working on this problem for a couple weeks, and it looks we narrowed it down to a MS sercurity hotfix that came out in early November 2003

If you go into add & remove programs do you have one of the following listed?

Hotfix #KB81337
Hotfix #KB81021
Hotfix #KB81270
Hotfix #KB81338

Thanks
