XML converters installed, Word v.X doesn't use them

I downloaded and installed the Office XML converters as per MS instructions.
They appear in \Library\Application Support\Microsoft\Office Converter
Support. My computer fulfills all requirements (Mac OS X 10.4.11, Office v.X
10.1.9) suggested by Microsoft.

However Word v.X doesn't know how to open a .docx file, and the list of
suggested filters doesn't include anything for .docx files. What's wrong?

As I understand it Office X doesn't have the necessary mechanism to allow
opening the OXML files. The files need to be converted first, then the
Office X app will be able to open the converted version.

Thank you Microsoft for saying that I could, and I quote from

Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.0.2
Open XML Converter allows you to convert Open XML files that were created in
Office 2008 for Mac or Office 2007 for Windows so that you can open, edit,
and save them in earlier versions of Office for Mac. Open XML Converter can
convert Word documents, Excel workbooks, and PowerPoint presentations that
are in the Open XML Format so that you can open and edit the files in Office
2004 for Mac and Office v. X for Mac. You can choose to convert and open one
file, or convert a large number of files.

System Requirements
Important To open converted documents, you must have Office 2004 11.4.0 or
later, or Office v. X 10.1.9 or later installed on your computer. For the
best experience, we recommend that you install the Office 2004 11.5.1 Update
or a later update for Office 2004 for Mac.
So I guess that in Microsoft-speak "best experience" means "don't think
about it if you have an earlier version, despite what we just promised"

My apologies to Microsoft, sort of. In fact the converter is not part of
Word per se, not is one of its filters. It's a stand-alone application
called Open XML Converter (which to make it harder to find is called
Convertisseur Open XML in my French OS X with an English MS Office and an
English download of the converter package).

So I offer this for others who might have stumbled on the same raodblock.
