Can someone remind me how it is you get rid of the 'wings', i.e. like Ajax's
(was it he?) little wings attached to his heels?

Go into the Control Panel, Open the "Mouse", under the Pointers (Tab), click
in the Scheme Menu box, and select "Windows Default (system scheme).

You probably have "Click and type" enabled. Disable it on the Edit tab of
Tools | Options.
