There isn't a lot of information to go on but a common cause of the
inability to open Office documents is the Office Plug-in option in
Norton AV. If you have Norton AV go to Norton Options and in the
Miscellaneous section turn off "Enable Office Plug-in".

This sounds like you were using a different OS on the same computer. Did you
completely start from scratch or just dump XP on top of whatever you were
using?
