XP Office Pro Upgrade Installation Failure

Upgrading to new hardware and new applications.
From win98se and Office 2k to XP Pro and XP Office Pro.

The XP Office Pro upgrade CD proceeds normally until it
stops when trying to find a valid previous version on the
system. There is none as this is a fresh install. I put
in disk 1 CD from Office 2k and tell the install to look
there. It fails telling me it can't find a valid version
to upgrade from. I know the version I have is valid for
upgrade. After the above failure, I started the upgrade
on the old system and it went beyond where it failed on
the new system.

Has anyone else encountered this? Is this a bug or just
a MS 'security enhancement' to prevent illegal copying
that requires the previous version to actually be on the
hard disk? Previous versions read the CD with no
problems.

A friend suggested installing Office 2k on the new system
and then installing XP Office over it. I'd rather
install once and not twice if possible and not leave a
bunch of old files hanging around, but will if I have to.

I tried getting help on this at the MS office site [ bad
idea ? ] but it appears the site crashed [ or at least
that section ] when trying to process my request and I
can't get back in to resubmit. :) It wouldn't accept my
full product license key [ field length too short ]
either and that seemed to really give it problems.

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Russ
