XP Page Numbering

I cannot get the page numbers to increment each page in
Word XP. Whether I use XofY format or just the page
number, every page is page 1, or page 3, or page 19 if I
try setting the page number on a different page. I am
doing this in the footer, if that's an issue.

Has anyone else seen this? I even tried opening a new
document and the same problem appeared. Word also has the
habit of changing page numbers, TOCs, and graphics to a
code that I have to convert back to the original input.

If anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it.

Joseph,

When you say you try setting the page number, do you mean you actually are trying to set a page number on every page? Word uses field codes to generate automatic TOC, page numbers, etc. That's the codes you're seeing. If you are wanting to put your page numbers in manually, don't use the Insert/Page Number function. Otherwise, make sure you have the correct number on the first page and it will number itself properly. Also, if you want to change the sequence, you need a section break. Section breaks will allow you to completely change page number format or sequence.

Not sure if I'm answering what you ask but that's my best guess

As BJL Morgan said, those are field codes, nothing's been converted, it's
just a different view. You can change the view by right-clicking and
toggling field codes, or by hitting Alt-F9.

Thank you. I was used to old Word and being able to see
the actual page number. I re-inserted the codes and the
printout was correct.
