XP Professional

I have a Dell which came with Office XP Standard version installed. I need MS
Access so I need to upgrade my Office suite. I can buy MS Student Select
Office XP Professional through my University at a very low price (<$65), but
I am unsure if I would be better off doing this or just upgrading to Office
2003. Any thoughts?

Hi;

Depends on what you want to do and what your budget can handle.

It would be best to upgrade to Office 2003.

However, if you just need MS Access 2002 (XP), then you can purchase
just that package to go along with the rest of your Office XP Standard.

Turns out I have Office XP Small Business, which does not include any version
of Access. So I guess that leaves a couple of questions: (1) Since I don't
have a version of Access to upgrade, I will need to buy a full version of
Access 2003 right? (2) Is MS Student Select Office XP Professional eligible
for upgrade to Office 2003, should I choose to make that upgrade at a later
time?

Office XP Small Business Edition qualifies you for upgrade
pricing when purchasing Office 2003 Professional (which includes
Access 2003) as well as the standalone version of Access 2003.
See
http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/howtobuy/professional.mspx
and http://www.microsoft.com/office/access/howtobuy/default.mspx
for more information. I'm not exactly sure how the Student
Select program works, but generally speaking, academic versions
do not qualify for upgrade pricing when the next version becomes
available because academic prices are often already lower than
upgrade prices.

Your response confirms the "problem" I have, which is making a choice on
which way to go. I can buy the street version of Office 2003 Professional at
a student discount for $199, or the Student Select version of the same suite
for $60.25. The only last thing making me hesitant about teh full upgrade is
the number of posts in this Group about problems with Office 2003. Since I
don't visit these much, is the volume of posts normal in your view, or higher
than usual?

Hi Ronald,

People don't often post in the Office setup/update groups with
'success' stories. Viewing the postings here as a represenation
of MS Office would give you a fairly slanted view of things. :)

Note that the 'Select' edition is a volume license agreement
where support comes from the license holder (in this case probably
the school and your peers, including here) rather than from Microsoft.
OEM editions are intended for pre-installation on a new PC and
for those edition the support comes from the PC supplier.

Retail editions, whether 'full package' or 'upgrade' retail package
have end user support from Microsoft.
