XP Security Update- Office 2003 Quit Responding

I just installed the Windows security updates. Now I cannot get into any of
the Office 2003 programs. They would open, but if I clicked on any of the
icons to open, save etc. the programs would quit responding. I even tried
inistalling and reinstalling Office. I finally ended up doing a System
Restore to yesterday's date, and everything seems to be working fine. It's
asking me to download and install the updates again, but I think I will hold
off. Is anyone else having this problem? I also ran a virus scan, and there
were no viruses found.

Yes, I am having exactly the same problem. Thanks for the tip to do a
System Restore, I did the same thing, and it appears I can now reopen these
files.... a bit scary. Will be interesting to see how widespread this issue
is.

I did report the issue, it directed me to the Office update site, I ran the
available updates and it made no difference to the problem.

Yes, I have the same problem. It also affects Office XP which I have
installed on the same computer. I can open files by doubleclicking them
in Explorer or from the recently used files list in the Office
applications themselves but not through "File - Open".

Unfortuanatly, I uninstalled Microsoft Front Page and Microsoft Digital Image
Suite 2006, and I am unable to reinstall them. I get an error message that
says "This Patch Program cannot be opened. Verify that this program exists
and that you can access it or contact the application vendor to verify that
this is a valid Windows installer patch package." I also get it on all my
Microsoft programs, whether I am installing or uninstalling them. Anyone else
getting these messages or has anyone found a fix, before I end up reformating
and reloading from scratch?

I am having the exact same problem. I'm waiting for Microsoft to come out
with a fix before downloading the updates again. Using system restore on a
daily basis is not very comforting.

The "fix" came out a few days ago, and there have been numerous posts about
it in this and other MS newsgroups.
Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security

I do have HP Share to disc loaded. I ended up performing an FDISK and
reloading everything. So far no known problems even before loading the
HP/Microsoft update.
