I apologize for my ignoance but are the spread sheets on
xp a simple version of Excel and if so which version? Are
the free downloads going to help me get familiar, are they
easy to use and understand? I am new to Excel and trying
to learn more about it and its uses.

Excel 2002 and Excel XP are the same.
You probably need a spreadsheet to keep track of
names that each version can be called.

There is no dumbed down version of Excel with the Excel
brandname.

There are lots of Tutorials and lots of spreadsheets to
download for learning. I think downloads is too generalized
to know which you are referring to. I would suggest starting
with http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/excel.htm#tutorials
many of them are for university students without regard to major
so they are very general and should help get you started. After
one or two of those you should be in decent shape to evaluate
what will actually help you.

Just to verify.

You were talking about Office XP (not Windows XP).

A lot of new systems come with WindowsXP and Microsoft Works (not excel!).

If you meant the spreadsheet application that came bundled with your new pc, it
very likely could have been MSWorks.

Windows XP is the operating system--things that control the computer (like
harddrives, keyboards, peripherals).

MSWorks -- basic suite of applications (including MSWord also included in
MSOffice).

MSOffice -- more advanced suite of applications
(where more advanced = more powerful and more $$$).
