XPS Files

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel How do I create an XPS file using Word ? I assume there must be a was as MS are pushing this format. I have been having loads of problems with Adobe Reader rendering images badly from PDF files (only on Mac) so want to switch to XPS but cannot find any way.

(Also looking for free Mac XPS viewer)

Mac Word 2008 file save as does not appear to have XPS format.

Perhaps you can use Windows Word for this use?

Or you could resolve the problems with what you are doing (impossible to
comment based on what you say if issue is Acrobat, PDF, Word, or whatever.)

Perhaps if you have high-end requirements, you would have better success
in using Adobe's Acrobat for Mac product
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatpro/systemreqs/ to make PDFs that
Acrobat renders.

Hi Simon;

MS has been 'pushing' ActiveX as well [for years], but it has never made it
to the Mac OS. Nor is XPS viable on Macs at this time. There are supposedly
1 or 2 readers for it but I haven't been able to find them... MS doesn't
make one & most of those that were "announced" have faded into the sunset.

I'm not sure why you're having a problem with Reader, though. Not dismissing
your claim, but that's the first comment of that nature I've heard. Have you
tried other PDF readers, such as Apple's Preview app?

(Not the forum for Adobe Reader problems so I hope my clarification does not annoy any "Nothing to do with word" participants)

I am studying a Distance Learning Course and am doing an essay that includes a number of pictures (copyright free from internet source, NASA, JPL, Universities), colour and grey scale, .jpg and .png. From Work (for Mac) they print out fine. Export to PDF and use Adobe Reader to print it and the pics have very strong blue tint and are much darker. Print from Preview and they are fine, print from Windows PC using Adobe Reader and fine. Import PDF pages into Photoshop and print and fine. Just Adobe Reader on Mac is messing up (from my tests anyway).

I normally send in work in PDF but the strong blue tint is critical (as the blue indicates something in the pics !!) - hence looking for another format.

Without an alternative I am thinking of sending in the .docx and hoping they have a viewer or new enough versions of Word (some UK Universities have a lot of freedom regarding installing what they need, others are really controlled - the previous Univ I studied under still used Office 95 last year and their IT would not allow upgrades or anything not under their control to be installed !!).

Thanks for the help - I guess XPS is not viable for me.

I don't quite see your logic, so in summary

Create PDF: Word for Mac

Results:

Adobe Reader (Mac): print with blue tint
Preview (Mac): print ok
Adobe Reader (Windows) print ok
PhotoShop print ok

So, just printing from Adobe Reader on Mac is the problem. But,
printing mostly (I believe) controlled mostly by the system and the
printer driver and Adobe Reader working together.

And you only known about your machine, not the people to whom you send
the file to. Does it print blue print when you use another machine with
another printer? Do a test send to to whomever is going to receive it
and find out if a) they plan to print, and b) if they do, does it print
with blue tint?

Don't think send as doc is the solution. It will lead to its own
problems.

They do intend to print it (its a University submission for marking). Trouble is that the blue is "significant" as blue bits of the planet indicate a specific surface material - hence the importance (more than aesthetics).

I tried from my Windows PC and it seems fine. It does appear limited to my Mac with Adobe Reader. The work has to be in by Monday so not much time to cross examine the University about their printing platform and to get them to check if the pictures has the right amount of blue, etc. (not normal pics but pics of planets, etc. hence no "normal").

I only have the 1 Mac to try. As the submitted work is part of a formal assessment it is too important to risk messing up because of the platform they seem to use to print. On my Mac I am sure it is only Adobe Reader that messes up the colours (Preview and Photoshop CS4 print it fine). Also, not just one or two pics but all from different sources, different formats, some with embedded colour profiles, some without and all processionally created.

I am sort of "tearing my hair out" and appreciate any suggestions - particularly as this is a Word forum and not this is not a Word problem.

Thanks
Simon

Hi Simon:

Sounds like a "Colour Profile" problem.

Open your ColorSynch utility and try the sRGB profile.

Open Adobe Reader, and see if it has a setting for sRGB.

Hope this helps
