Interesting, I renamed the file to .vss and I can open it - any ideas
why it doesn't want to work as a .vsd.

The file format for a Visio file is the same for stencils, drawings,
templates and workspaces. The only difference is the file extension. Stencil
do not require a drawing page, so it sounds like you had a stencil that was
renamed to have a VSD extension.

After a bit of internal discussion, we chose not to talk about the VSW
extension in the posting because that workspace concept is retired. We
still store information about your workspace in every Visio document.
