how do you add y error bars to data points on graph. I have a row in my data table with my standard deviation values; I just can't figure out how to put them on the graph.

Thanks,
Mandy

in Ecxel 2004, from help (it is useful sometimes!):

1. Click (once) on the data series to which you want to add error
bars.
2. On the Format menu, click Selected Data Series.
3. On the X Error Bars tab or the Y Error Bars tab, select the options
you want.

if you have you own calculated error values you will need to choose
the "custom" button and then define the reference to the apprpriate
area in your data table. Note that under this option excel allows for
asymetric errors and you have to enter values for both positive and
negative errors.

Sorry, I should have specified that I was using Excel 2008. I don't think it works the same way as the 2004 version. I can't seem to figure out where the "Y error bar tab" is in the newer 2008 version. And when I tried the help function in Excel 2008, y error bars are not even included in the contents.

ok, i see where i can add the y error bars (format data series), but i don't have a button that says custom. Does Excel 2008 not allow custom error bars? I would appreciate any pointers as to how to add custom standard deviations values. Thanks!

I second this important question. I can find no custom option, so every std. dev. is the same--a useless option. Where in h___ is the custom button?

Hi Mandy, Bruce,

Custom error bars are among the missing features we are working on. For more
information, please see the "We're working on it!" thread (dated 3/12/08).

Hi Bruce,
Please see the "We're working on it!" thread (starting 3/12/08). The
missing custom error bars button is a known issue that as Todd said, we're
actively working on. Thanks for your feedback.
