Years don't show up properly in chart

I'm trying to make a simple chart of unit sales [items, not money]
The data looks like this:
1 A B
2 Year Units
3 2001 1,071,064
4 2002 1,242,549

and so on up to 2009

So I click on Elements / Charts / Bar Charts and select the cells

and the bars for the years are numbered 1-9 not 2001-2009.

What's wrong?
