You should be able to include connectors in the legend.

While trying to make a legend I found that shapes (squares, circles, etc.)
could be added to a legend but for some reson somone decided not to allow
connectors to be added. Hopefully I'm just not doing right. If anyone know
how to do this please let me know.

It seems that the legend only accepts 2D shapes (ie: shapes with box-like
behavior, not shapes with endpoint behavior)

I tried some sneaky gyrations, but couldn't get really satisfactory results.

This is correct. The legend was specifically designed to ignore one-D
shapes.
