I doubt very seriously that Microsoft will sacrifice the beauty, elegance,
and functionality of the new Office 2007 simply because there are those who
feel the UI is too new and different. . . .

Possibly, but if Office 2007 falls way behind sales targets, Microsoft
is sufficiently unsentimental that they'd likely reevaluate the new UI.
FWIW, Microsoft gave all the Office applications new menus when they
introduced Excel 5 (I forget the corresponding Word version), but they
also provided (at least in Excel) the old menu as an option.
In my opinion, Microsoft will simply have to find a way to show potential
users, up front, how the UI works. Once a user knows how to get around in the
program, they're going to be absolutely amazed at how much more efficient
Office 2007 really is. It's a brilliant alternative to the tired old dropdown
menus and toolbars.

Maybe so for Word, in which most of the menu commands to the right of
the Format menu still have to do with layout. Debatable for Excel in
which they have more to do with calculation. Those who mostly use Excel
are likely to be much less pleased with the changes than those who
mostly use the other apps.
