Zip code with leading zero Mail Merge Problems

J

John Guzik

I'm using an Excel spreadsheet as my data source. I'm
mailing newsletters to various people, the problem comes
when the destination zip code has a leading zero--like New
Jersey has. Word will not import this data. The zip code
field comes up blank only for them, with the Pensylvania,
Delaware, etc. zip codes, there are no problems.

No matter how I format the data in Excel, it doesnt' come
out right. I've made it "number stored as text" and also
a fixed 5 digit field since even if I format it as a "zip
code" it drops the leading zero and a zip code such as
07977 comes out as 7977, also preventing the bar code from
printing.

I had to write out the addresses by hand this time, but
would really want to figure out what the problem is so I
don't have to do this all the time.

That helped fix the zero problem, thanks. Now I just have to figure out why
the barcode field says the zip code is invalid. Not a big deal as I don't
really care about the barcode, it was just a nice detail.

The first method - explained with illustrations - was to change the
connection method from OLEDB to DDE! You would have had to dig for the
chosen method using that link.
