After change Custom Enterprise Field not passing to Portfolio

Project Server 2007 SP2, Portfolio Server SP1
Made a change to the value of the Custom Enterprise field (spelling change
only). When attempting to run the gateway receive error message:The project
cannot be exported to Microsoft Project Server 2007 due to the following
reason: The specified code value does not exist in the lookup table.

The values were identical in server and portfolio, we were able to run the
gateway when we returned the custom enterprise field value to the original
value.
Also attempted to delete the custom field and recreat it with the new value
(unsuccessfully).
Any suggestions on protocol for updating the values?
