Cannot insert Autoshapes into Word document

From the Drawing toolbar I click on the shape I wish to insert (oval).
Then I click on the document where I wish to insert the shape. Only the
grid outline (i.e. the eight tiny squares representing the autoshape)
appear on the document. I cannot get the actual shape itself to appear.
Using Office 2000
Anyone any ideas ?

Do you use text boxes frequently? Have you therefore set their default
formatting to No Line and No Fill? This formatting applies to *all*
AutoShapes.
