Disk full/autorecover

Inquiries about this a few months ago area no longer alive. Like others, when I use Microsoft Word, I get a disk full message regarding autorecovery; cannot save. Recently the softward wouldn't even let me save to a flash disk. Like others, I have lots of storage space. I've turned the computer off. No help. I even took iMac to the Apple store today and they worked on. Reinstalled Office 2008. I'm a writer, not a a techie. In laymen speak, how does one determine what is a valid location? I've done the permission repair thing, but nothing seems to solve this problem. I'm obviously not the only person with the problem. What is a clear, simple solution? And do the microsoft techies know this is a problem? Many thanks.

Hi Richard:

There is no simple, clear solution.

Reinstalling Office would have exactly NO effect on this problem (other than
to make it worse...) and the people at the Mac shop should know that.

The error message simply means "Unable to write to disk." Apart from the
things you have tried, there is no cure. You just have to keep applying the
updates as they come in, and hope that one of them will fix it. Make sure
you have the latest updates applied now.

This is not "one thing" going wrong. It is any one of several things,
singly and in combination. The error message is very generic -- it simply
says "Write failed", it does not say why or where.

There are a large number of causes: some of them Apple's fault, some of
them Microsoft's fault. Both companies have put out some updates, and will
put out more, in an attempt to fix this.

Yes, Microsoft is keenly aware that they have some work to do on this.

It's not a good idea to try to edit on a USB drive. They can make this
problem worse. Copy the file to your local hard disk before opening it.

If you turn on "Always make backup" in Word's preferences, you will see this
error "less often".

Hope this helps
