Email attachment of Word document received as gibberish

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel

Help! When I send (in Mail, not Entourage) an attached word document (.doc not .docx) it arrives to SOME computers (both PC and Mac) as gibberish. If I change to my desktop computer (Leopard / Office 2004), open the email and resave the word document, then resend it as an attachment from there, the documents open fine.

What's the problem?
What can I do to fix it?

Customise Mail to make it send attachments in a Windows-friendly encoding.
To do that, click on Edit>Attachments>Always Send Windows Friendly
Attachments. See if that solves the problem.
