Endnote numbering

M

Melanie

I am working with a 200 page manuscript. It is four chapters total. the
endnotes in chapters 1 and 2 are fine. However, the first endnote in chapter
3 is the same number as the last number in chapter 2. And then all of the
endnotes for chapter 3 are that number. The numbering goes back to normal
for chapter four. The endnotes appear numbered properly in the text of the
document, it is int the endnote text section where the numbering goes strange.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

The first thing to check is whether you've accidentally (or through a nice
feature know as "document corruption") set the numbering to something other
than what you want.

Go to the point in the document just before the first problem occurs, and
check the settings in in the Footnote and Endnote dialog. Then move to where
the problem starts, and check the settings. Are the settings correct?

Is each chapter a separate document section? What numbering settings are you
using?

If your settings are correct, then my first guess would be document
corruption. What happens to the numbering if you copy/paste each chapter to
a separate new file? Does the problem still occur?

If so, what happens if you save the file in RTF, close it, re-open it, then
re-save it in Word format? Sometimes, going through this process can cleanse
the corruption.

I also should ask whether you're using any add-ons that might affect
numbering, or whether you're using Word's native endnote feature.

Also, are you Tracking Changes? If so, the numbers will sort themselves out
when all the Changes have been Accepted/Rejected. If not, be sure to answer
all Herb's questions.
