Hello. I keep getting asked to type my passwords for my 2 email addresses within Entourage before mail is sent. And yes, I check the box that says to save in the Keychain. So why does this keep happening? Appreciate the help.

This is quite common.

Send & Receive Basics:

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

You can try re-entering info.
You can delete account and create a new one.
Using copy/paste can result in an extra space being added. Type carefully.
Check your Keychain for corruption.

Keychain First Aid:

Run Keychain Access found in /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.

Go to the Keychain Access Menu and drag down to Keychain First Aid.
Enter your login password, click 'Verify' and 'Start'.

You will probably get some items colored red. Click 'Repair' and 'Start'. If
some items are still red, 'Repair' again.

Test to see if the problem is fixed. If not...

1. Go to the system keychain and delete the entry for that account.

2. Go to Entourage, select 'accounts' from the Tools menu, choose the
account that was giving you trouble and delete. Create a new account. Save.

Thank you! Had the same problem. Had already deleted and created new ones. Didn't help. Repairing the Keychain showed errors and they are now fixed. So far so good!

At the moment the passwords typed in to the box for setting up accounts
disappear as soon as they are entered.

That should have been the login keychain, not the system keychain. Be sure
the login keychain is not locked.

I jumped the gun... I did the fix as recommended and it lasted only a few hours. I've gone back into the keychain first aid several times since, it always finds an error and always fixes it... but it's temporary. What now?

BTW... this JUST started happened with the latest office update I installed. Here's my error listing that show in red:

Item “incoming.verizon.net” has unspecified value for port attribute
Item “incoming.verizon.net” has unspecified value for port attribute

Does the info you are using work in Apple Mail?

Did you delete the account or just the info in the account?

Did you delete the account in the Keychain?

Send & Receive Basics:

Send & Receive problems can be complex to solve, but generally these
solutions apply:

If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

Open Keychain Access application in Applications/Utilities folder. Run
Keychain First Aid. It's in the Keychain menu under Keychain Access. This
might fix the problem, if not, delete the entry for that account.

Go to Entourage, select 'Accounts' from the Tools menu, choose the account
that was giving you trouble and delete that account. You should now be able
to create a new account and enter the correct information. Type carefully.
If you paste don't include spaces.

The password should now stick.

Entourage 2008 simply refuses to login anymore. I've tried everything. Meanwhile, my Outlook on XP application works fine. I just don't understand how I can pay $500 for a product that is so fragile that it stops working and there is no solution that you can give me.

You can blame Microsoft, but everyone is not having the problems you are
experiencing. It's something in YOUR setup.

It's not just Entourage, see this response on another list about Apple Mail:

why won't Mail save the passwords?

To reiterate, it is NOT a Mail problem. Mail itself doesn't save your
password, Keychain does, and it remembers your password. The issue
arises when your ISP mail server does not respond in a timely fashion
and Mail, not being very 'verbose' throws up an 'error', that is to
say, your password box. From Mail's perception, if the server is not
letting it in, then it MUST be a password issue. It is not. At least,
99.99% of the time.

Ok, I went to apple's support site and found an article on resetting the keychain:

<http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1544>

I followed these instructions, deleted ALL keychain items. Then restarted as instructed. Went into Entourage and deleted ALL my accounts and created new ones. I was able to Send/Receive all a total of two times and it went back to saying that there was a userID/password problem. I reentered my password (as I've been doing for the past week) and all is good for another two or three rounds and then back to losing my password.

Where do I go now? Is this an issue I need to address with my ISP?

BTW this happens to me on SEND and RECEIVE...

If the issue is a result of slow download times, then only your ISP can
help. You can try testing in a new User account or create a new account in
Gmail, for example, and see if it works any better.

If the Gmail account works you could have your mail forwarded to Gmail and
use it to download.

Again, my problem is the same one many other users are experiencing:
I can't use the mail feature. Just erased all the keychain login info; deleted my entourage mail account, added a brand new one (new to entourage), and after setting the account when it goes to verification I get the (in)famous message:
"Verification Failed: "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password" (-17900 )"

How can the password be bad already? it's been up for two seconds?

R

Rosa Lara

I then tried to sent my files anyway and this is what I got (over and over):

"The server for account "X" returned the error "authorization failedd (#5.7.0). Your username, passwrod, or securoty settings may be incorrect. Would you like to try re-entering your password?"

Choosing yes or no doesn't make a difference. I'm trapped with a database that I can't get out of entourage.
Please help.
Thank you
Rosa

No, my problem is not slow downloads... it's problem with storing of my passwords which is why I point the finger at Entourage. I have only had this problem since I installed the latest upgrade to Office 2008... I have keychain items stored for my .mac accounts using Apple's Mail program and I don't have to enter those passwords when checking mail.

I get the same error message that Rosa Lara stated above. But, as I said before the problem is sporadic... Once I enter the password, it will work for a few downloads (I have my entourage to automatically check my mail every 10 mins.) after a few automatic downloads it loses the passwords and asks me to reenter.

I work home and live by my email. This is very frustrating as I now have to manually check my email periodically to make sure I'm getting everything.

This thread has gotten out of hand. There are so many posters asking about
their particular problem that it's very confusing. It's always best to start
your own thread and give YOUR details for help. This way replies will be
specific to YOUR problem.

I just did a Google search to see if there were solutions we have missed. I
found that this error is rampart in both the Mac and PC world. The solutions
vary depending on the type of account. Exchange accounts involve server
issues too.

First the basics:

1) Make sure you have the correct password. Check via your web browser. You
might want to try changing your password.

2) Test in a new Identity. During my search I found that if one of your
mailboxes contains messages in non-Roman characters - for instance, you get
spam in Chinese -- Entourage will have problems syncing with the Exchange
server and will spit back an error. Testing in a new Identity will eliminate
any emails like this. If your new Identity solves the issue, the solution is
to delete all of those non-Roman messages, and then use Outlook Web Access
via Safari -- not Entourage -- to purge your Deleted Items folder.

3) Do you use Adium? I found one user's solution that involved Adium.

Disable Adium as a Login Item
Restart Mac
Start Entourage
If you just quit Adium and Entourage without a restart, wait at least an
hour before restarting Entourage. I think this give the machine time to
release the network element that is clashing...

4) Solution posted on one email provider's website:

Update your email address in the Account ID field using the following
format:
1. Replace the '@' sign with a pound sign (#).
2. Truncate to 20 characters.
For example, the email address:
    (e-mail address removed)
would be reformatted as:
    uname#networkeq.co.u

5) Test in a new User account. Go to System Preferences --> Create a New
User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User
Switching. Open Entourage and enter your account info. Under the Options
tab, set to "leave on server" for the test. Testing in a new User will
eliminate any problems in your User's folder.

6) Exchange users see this post: "Exchange Server hotfix resolves Entourage
login problems" <http://tinyurl.com/5aetvu>

7) You could try monitoring the traffic between Entourage and your ISP using
EavesDrop. <http://www.baurhome.net/software/eavesdrop/index.html>

Lastly, your ISP should be able to help. They should be able to monitor a
connection and tell you what is failing. Even if they say they don't support
Entourage, tell them to give you directions for any Mac software. Most ISPs
offer a web page with details on how to connect.

I'm going to ask that this thread be closed. If you continue to have
problems, please start a new thread. Give details. See this page for
additional help before posting your question:
