Error 5.1.1 <user@domain>... User Unknown. Error: -17092

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel
Email Client: pop

I have a 100% reproducible issue in Entourage 2004 and 2008 in my environment. When writing to an address that does not exist in the domain, the sender receives an error and the message will sit in the Outbox until deleted.

The error is:
==================================
Error
5.1.1 <[email protected]>... User unknown

Explanation
Cannot send mail. The SMTP server does not recognize any of the authentication methods supported by Entourage. Try changing the SMTP authentication options in Account settings or contact your network administrator.

Account name: "(e-mail address removed)"

Error: -17092
===============================

That alone isn't a big issue if the email is only to that one recipient. However, if a user uses reply all to reply to an email which included the "(e-mail address removed)" as an original recipient, the Entourage client will send to all of the addresses in the TO line prior to that "(e-mail address removed)" but will cease at that address and the email will then sit in the Outbox and never send to the remaining valid recipients.

As for the error itself, the "Explanation" portion does not seem to be accurate. The authentication for the clients is fine and can send to any valid user without an issue.

Does anyone know of a resolution to this, other than telling the users to remove all invalid addresses from their TO line?

If a user using Outlook were to write to that address, they would simply receive an email back from the mail server stating that the account did not exist, but it would not impact their ability to send. Can that kind of setup be reproduced within Entourage?

I'm forwarding this on to development. Don't expect to see a quick fix. I'm
just hoping to bring this issue to their attention and get it on a list to
fix. I suggest you also send feedback to MSFT.

When working in Office, you can use the ³Send Feedback² option under the
Help menu in all of the Office applications.

Thank you for forwarding this issue, Diane. I will send feedback as you suggested.

Hello,

I was unable to reproduce this with a POP account. What I saw was, my
email would get sent out (the recipients list contained 1 valid, 1 invalid,
and 1 valid email addresses) and I would receive an email from the Mail
Delivery Subsystem telling me that the delivery of the email to the invalid
email address has failed. I still received the email at the valid email
address which was after the invalid address.

Do you have a solid sample (such as actual email accounts at a domain)
that I can test this with?

Hui Chin,

I've had the same problem as this user, except that it happened NOT when the
user was unknown, but when the domain itself didn't exist. I've found the
latter to be a hard error to catch, especially if the domain name is long
and the error is a missing letter or a transposition. E.g, it would be as if
I sent you an e-mail to (e-mail address removed).

I suggest you try a test of that situation, as well as trying to get a
sample from the previous user.

I hope this helps.
Ed.

I apologize for not responding sooner. I'm afraid this is these last two weeks have been the last two weeks of our institutions current academic term and things have been a little crazy.

I'm afraid it does not appear possible to reproduce this issue from outside of our institution. It only occurs when a person connected to our internal network emails a user that does not exist in the email system.

Emailing from outside of our internal network results in a typical bounce back email stating that the email could not be delivered.

Hello,

No problem. :) To track down this issue, would you mind trying something
out for us please? On Apple's Terminal app, try typing the following:

telnet [SMTP host for your pop account] 25
helo [any text]
mail from: [your user id]@[domain.com]
rcpt to: [usrname]@[badhost.com] OR rcpt to [badusrid]@[goodhost.com]

Can you please take note of the SMTP error that you get back after you
enter the "rcpt to" line?

Thank you for continuing to work with me on this issue. I had thought after my delay it may have been forgotten or assumed closed.

Result of testing baduser@goodhost:
rcpt to: (e-mail address removed)
550 5.1.1 (e-mail address removed)... User unknown

Result of testing gooduser@badhost:
rcpt to: (e-mail address removed)
250 2.1.5 (e-mail address removed)... Recipient ok

Ed,

When you run into this problem with the invalid domain, what does the
exact error message on Entourage look like? If you were to try out the same
thing using telnet on the Terminal (please refer to one of my earlier
posts), what error message do you see? Thanks!

Hui Chin,
When I send an e-mail to an address at an invalid domain via my
worldnet.att.net ISP, I get the following error window:

Error
[PERMFAIL] destination not valid within DNS

Explanation
Mail could not be sent.
Account name: "Worldnet"

Error: -17099

Do you still need me to test via Telnet?

BTW, I had a heck of a time finding an invalid domain. In particular,
Microsoft has registered the domain mircosoft.com, which I used in my
example, apparently to help handle typos. :)
"whois" told me that several other domains that I thought I had made up,
such as xxxyyyzzz.com (or .org) and ghijk.com have also been registered!
