Help! Unknown error (-17199) Cannot Send Messages

Hello:

I love macs and in an effort to get life more organized, and after
reading several posts on the merits of Mac mail vs. Entourage, I
decided to go with Entourage (mostly because it was so easy using it
with my new Blackberry).

Unfortunately, my new efforts have made life more complicated! I am
trying to get my gmail on my Entourage--first I set it up as POP,
received all messages but could not send. Got a "cannot find server
please check settings and DNS" error message. Then I deleted it and
set it up as IMAP. I still continue to get messages smoothly, but I
still cannot send. I have a new error message

"An unknown error (-17199) has occurred. A message in your Outbox
could not be sent. The account which created the message cannot be
found."

I have checked and rechecked the stmp and imap addresses, deleted the
email account, restarted Entourage several times to no avail.

Please help! Entourage could really make a big impact on helping me
organize my life and my inbox (1000+ messages that need to be
organized!)

As for set up, I followed the directions from
http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2007/11/connect_entourage_2004_to_gmails_imap_service.html

Thank you!

I'm using smtp.gmail.com port 587 (rather than port 465 as recommended
on that web page), and sending works fine for me. You may want to try
changing the port. Also, my user name does not contain the @gmail.com
portion. You might try that as well.

Thank you very much for the suggestion. I get a new error message
now:
"Entourage cannot find server. Verify that the server information is
entered correctly in account settings and that your DNS settings in
the Network pane of system preferences is correct." Error -3176

I don't know if it makes a difference but I have another account .edu
POP into Entourage. It's not set as the default account, but I can't
get mail to send from it either. I still continue to get mail from
both in Entourage.

When I open the Network pane of system preferences, my DNS is blank.
Is this the issue?

Thanks again! I hope to get this up and running soon..

I still continue to get messages smoothly, but I
still cannot send. I have a new error message

"An unknown error (-17199) has occurred. A message in your Outbox
could not be sent. The account which created the message cannot be
found."

Delete the password info in Keychain Access (Applications --> Utilities
folder) also. If you still have problems, create a new Identity in Entourage
and enter just this one account. This will eliminate any problems in your
database.

To create a new Identity, Under Entourage in the Menu bar select Switch
Identity. Click on New. To try Gmail as POP, see this page:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/accounts/gmail.html>

Let us know if this helps. If not, you might need to try a new User. This
would eliminate problems in your User's folder. In System Preferences create
a new User. Use Fast User switching or log in/out to test in a new User.

FYI....
Send & Receive Basics:

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

You can try re-entering info.
You can delete account and create a new one.
Using copy/paste can result in an extra space being added. Type carefully.
Check your Keychain for corruption.
---------

Error -17199 and -18587

Entourage 2004 Exchange Error:

Attempting to send anything yields either 'Unknown Error -17199' or 'HTTP
Error. Access to the resource is forbidden. Error -18597.'

This is probably because the e-mail address you typed in the Exchange
account dialog does not exactly match the one the server expects. Since the
addresses don't match, it doesn't allow you to send.

Thanks to you both. Using a combination of both of your suggestions,
it seems to work now. I deleted everything including the password
keychain, accounts, and did not use @gmail in the user account name
and it seems to be working. I am extremely happy about this..now onto
organizing. Thanks again!
