How do I create a curved slot

I have drawn this slot using the pencil tool and the ellipse tool.

I want to remove the portion of the circle in the slot area, but none
of the shape/operation tools in Visio 2000 seem to work. Does anyone
have a suggestion?

It appears that you have four shapes, two curved lines and a pair of
circles. Add a pair of connecting lines between the end of the two curves,
select the four lines and use Join to create a closed shape. Select this
closed shape and the two circles and use Union.

These commands are under the Shape --> Operations menu
