how to replace office 2004 identities Database

Identities database lost, so I went back in time (thanks to Mac's Time Machine) and got yesterday's identities folder. But in the now-brand new Entourage that opens up, I can't import the Database file. Through the import command, I can get all the way to that file, but it's grayed out, so I can't import it. Any suggestions?

Many thanks,
Ralph.

You don't import a database file, you place it in the Office 2004 Identities
folder. Then when you launch Entourage, you should be able to use Switch
Identities on the Entourage menu to select the particular identity.

If that doesn't work, then the Database file may not be intact (this can
happen if Entourage is in the process of updating it when Time Machine
runs). In that case, an older backup might be usable.

You can't import from the same version. More on import/export:

Exactly what file did you import? Did you look to see if you moved your
Identity? That's the usual reason that Entourage opens in a new blank
Identity.

It's advised not to let Time Machine backup your Entourage database. If the
database is copied while being used, the backup could be corrupt. You can
set the Time Machine to exclude the Microsoft User Data folder and create an
iCal event to copy it over at night while not in use so you get one backup
daily in Time Machine.

Alternative method to use Entourage and Time Machine (does a once a day or
whatever time period you select)

Entourage and Time Machine (creates chronological backup of Identity can be
used by both Tiger and Leopard)
