Importing Messages Into Mail.app

R

Rick O'Shey

Although I've successfully done this before, since moving to a new machine
running Snow Leopard, I can't seem to do so now: Although all of my
Entourage folders appear to have been imported into Mail.app, only the
initial folder and its subfolders contains messages -- all of the other
folders and their subfolders are empty.

Suggestions?

Hi Rick,

this appears to be a problem with Mail, not Entourage, so you might be
better off asking the question on Apple's discussion boards.

However, if the number of folders you are trying to import is rather
small, you can simply drag the folder from the folder list in Entourage
to the desktop; you can then import the resulting mbox files into Mail
when you're done (via File>Import Mailboxes).

FWIW, I quickly checked out the Apple discussion board, and discovered that
I'm not alone -- several folks have run into the same problem. I haven't
(yet) found a solution.

Hi Rick,

I don't know what to suggest other than the manual method I described in
my earlier post. This appears to be a problem with Mail's import
filters, though I'd be happy to be corrected if that assumption is
wrong. The Apple discussion boards are the place to watch; perhaps some
users will come up with a different solution, using a third-party tool.

Actually, Michel, it appears to be an Entourage problem, and not a Mail.app
problem. I found a suggestion on the Apple discussion boards (in hindsight,
rather obvious): Use the Entourage export script "Archive Message Folders."
I tried that -- quite a few times, actually -- but each time it failed about
25% (by size) of the way through.

Any ideas?

Hi Rick,

you could actually be experiencing the first symptoms of a database
corruption. Quit Entourage, then relaunch it while holding down the
Option (alt) key. This will launch the Database Utility, which you can
use to determine if there is anything wrong with your database.

If that doesn't solve your problem, we'll try exporting and reimporting
your data next. Post back as soon as you have more details.

Isn't it easier/quicker to simply do a rebuild? (IOW, the amount of time it
takes to perform a verification is about the same amount of time it takes to
perform a rebuild.) Or is there a reason not to do a rebuild unless it's
absolutely necessary?

In any event, I followed your instruction, and after about an hour of
verifying, the Utility reported that the database was OK. However, I am a
bit suspicious, for 2 reasons:

1. This morning, I was unable to get Entourage to receive messages: I'd try
the various menu and toolbar commands, but nothing would happen...no
response, no activity at all. Finally, Entourage decided to "listen" to me,
and did download my email. This has been occurring on and off for a few
days, always when I first start up Entourage in the morning.

2. After the verification process was completed. The "everything's OK"
dialog indicated that the start time for the verification was only moments
prior to the then-current time, when, in fact, verification began an hour
earlier.

Should I distrust the "everything's OK" dialog and perform a database
rebuild?

Hi Rick,

a rebuild used to be quite a destructive procedure in versions of
Entourage prior to 2008, as it would not preserve any categories or
links. The rebuild mechanism in Entourage 2008 is much more robust, as
it preserves categories (I am not sure about the links). Go ahead and
give it a try. If that still doesn't work, we'll try migrating your data
to a new identity to see if that solves your problems.

OK. But let me ask a quick question first...you had said that if the Utility
didn't find any corruption that:

"If that doesn't solve your problem, we'll try exporting and reimporting
your data next."

But:

1. Doesn't the "Archive Message Folders" script that I ran actually perform
an export? If so, then how does the "exporting" you mentioned differ?

2. You now are suggesting that rather than "exporting and reimporting," I
may instead need to perform a "migration." What made you change your mind?

Hi Rick.

an export? If so, then how does the "exporting" you mentioned differ?

I don't appear to have that script on my computer, so either I deleted
or renamed it, or you installed it from somewhere. I don't know how the
script works, or what it does. It could trigger the Save As Archive
mechanism in Entourage, or it could simply export folders as mbox files.
There is a difference between these two methods.

I used two different expressions to talk about the same thing. What I
suggest is exporting all your data as an Entourage archive using the
File>Export command, and then re-importing that archive into a new
Entourage identity. This results in the creation of a fresh, new
database, which the import filters in Mail may then be able to read
properly.

mechanism in Entourage, or it could simply export folders as mbox files.
There is a difference between these two methods.

It's called "Archive Message Folders," and it's in my Entourage Script Menu
Items folder in my Microsoft User Data folder. AFAICT, it's identical to the
script http://www.entourage.mvps.org/downloads/scripts/jolly/Make_MBOX.zip,
which I believe simply exports all the folders and subfolders as mbox files.
I don't recall downloading the script, so I just _assumed_ it was part of my
original Office 2008 installation. (Of course, I could be totally wrong
about that.)

Per your original suggestion, I'll try the rebuild first. I'll let you know
if it resolves the problem.

BTW: What time zone are you in?
