Incorrectly displayed durations on Gantt. Wont finish on a weekend

Hello I have an issue I hope can be resolved.

I am using MS project to create a Gantt chart to print.
The Durations is a measurement of weeks.

If a task takes 3 weeks in duration it will not show fully three weeks on
the graph, I'm pretty sure it wont finish a task on a Weekend for some
reason. Yet the next subsequent task starts on the Monday like it should.

Can anyone offer an explanation?

Hi Starbuck,

It could be a number of issues but I suggest:

1) Check Project > Project Information and see which calendar you have set
as the project calendar. (If you are using the 24 Hours calendar, then the
working time is 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Weekends *are* working
time.)

2) Check Tools > Change working time to open the project calendar and see if
your weekends are set as working time.

3) Check your resources' calendars. Do they have weekends set as working
time?

4) Do you have a task calendar applied that has weekends set as working time?

Please also see FAQ #5 "Default Working Time" at:

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hello Julie, I believe because I'm a novice I forgot to set the project and
resource calanders to the 24hr and not pre-set standard.

I started again from scratch and now I have my project the way I want it :)
thank you.

You do realize that using the 24-hour calendar means that when a task begins
the resource will work on it continuously without a break, without a meal,
without a nap for days if need be until the task is done, do you not? The
goal should not be to create a schedule that fits some preconceived notion
of what it ought to be or what you want it to be. Rather it should be to
discover the most efficient schedule that can reasonably be achieved with
the assets you have available to work with. With the very rare exceptions
where the resources are machines, it is simply not reasonable to expect them
to work 24/7.

You're most welcome Starbuck and thanks for the feedback. Please post
again should you have any questions in the future.
