In Outlook 2000...Out of office is set up, but does not
work when someone sends email. They do not get the out of
office message.

The Out of Office assistant works only within your organization unless the
Exchange admin changes the settings on Exchange to allow forwards and
replies to the Internet. If s/he is a good admin, they will leave Exchange
with the default settings.

Just a couple of weeks ago, a good friend of mine watched the work Exchange
DB grow by leaps and bounds. Reason? Someone had put in a rule to forward
mail to his home while on vacation. Of course, he exceeded his ISPs limit
so he got overlimit messages, which he forwarded home, thereupon the ISP
sent a message that he was overlimit, etc. - one very nasty mail loop as the
original message was about 200kb.

This one person caused the information store to jump by about a gig every
couple of hours. They have since turned off replies to the Internet. (This
is off by default, smart admins leave it that way.)
