Outlook won't receive--bad windows update?

Howdy.

Troubleshooting a friends computer--XP SP2, Office pro 2003. Suddenly
Outlook will not receive messages. Friend claims only change was a
recent windows update.

I setup another computer on the same network and could send and receive
with no issues, so I know we have the account settings correct, and
there's no issue with the router (netgear) or ISP (cable through RCN).

Diabled the AV scan on incoming email (trend micro) so I dont think
that's the issue.

Tried uninstall/reinstall Outlook, tried the reinstall/repair Office
from control panel--no go.

Tried setting up a new email account in Outlook--it sends email but
will not receive.

When I "Test Account Settings..." the error is "Outlook could not
connect to the incoming mail server (POP3). The problem could be the
server name or port, or your server may not support SSL."

Again, I was able to receive email from the same account on a computer
on the same network. Oh, and I can ping the email server I am trying
to get email from.

This was working, and the claim is nothing has changed except for a
windows update.

Any thoughts??

TIA,

Sean

Are you saying I should remove the updates? How do you do that? And what are
Thunderbird and OpenOffice.org?

Thunderbird is a free Mail and News client from Mozilla, is highly
customisable, (far more so than Outlook) and with the addition of the
Calendar add-in, is more than adequate for home or stand-alone users. Open
Office is a free Office suite, that in it's current release (2.1) is easily
the equivalent of Office 2002 (without Outlook of course!)

Sean,
It was the auto update. Go to control panel and select add/remove programs.
Be sure the box at the top labelled "show updates" is checked.
Scroll down and you'll see the Jan10 Outllook security update.
Select uninstall.
I had to insert my Office disk to complete the uninstall.
I'm back in the saddle again!!!!

Removed the updates from last week (3 Office and 1 Windows), and now
the Outlook that was sending but not receiving will do neither.

Next step is to find a different application for email.

Thanks for the help,

Sean G.
